چکیده

The variation of the mass-to-light ratios M/L of early type galaxies as function of their luminosities L is investigated. It is shown that the tilt β = 0.27 (in the B–band) of the fundamental plane relation M/L ∝ L can be understood as a combination of two effects: about one-quarter (i.e. ∆β = 0.07) is a result of systematic variations of the stellar population properties with increasing luminosity. The remaining three-quarters (i.e. ∆β = 0.2) can be completely attributed to nonhomology effects that lead to a systematic change of the surface brightness profiles with increasing luminosity. Consequently, the observed tilt in the K–band (β = 0.17) where stellar population effects are negligible, is explained by nonhomology effects alone. After correcting for nonhomology, the mean value of the mass-to-light ratio of elliptical galaxies (M/LB) is 7.1±2.8 (1σ scatter). The Fundamental Plane and merger scenario I. Star formation history of galaxy mergers and origin of the Fundamental Plane

We perform numerical simulations of galaxy mergers between star-forming and gas-rich spirals in order to explore the origin of the Fundamental Plane (FP) of elliptical galaxies. We consider particularly that the origin of the slope of the FP is essentially due to the non-homology in structure and kinematics of elliptical galaxies and accordingly investigate structural and kinematical properties...

The Fundamental Scaling Relations of Elliptical Galaxies

We examine the fundamental scaling relations of elliptical galaxies formed through mergers. Using hundreds of simulations to judge the impact of progenitor galaxy properties on the properties of merger remnants, we find that gas dissipation provides an important contribution to tilt in the Fundamental Plane relation. Dissipationless mergers of disks produce remnants that occupy a plane similar ...

Quarter Boundary in Historical Fabrics of Iranian Cities Case Study: Ali Gholi Agha Quarter, Isfahan

The boundary of quarter is among the subjects that have been widely addressed in urban planning and urban design research. Clearly, several studies have examined the issue of “quarter boundaries in the historical fabric of Iranian cities”, but the literature review shows that there are still ambiguities in this regard. There are two contradictory answers to this issue: one group of studies ...

The Tilt of the Fundamental Plane of Elliptical Galaxies: I. Exploring Dynamical and Structural Effects

In this paper we explore several structural and dynamical effects on the projected velocity dispersion as possible causes of the fundamental plane (FP) tilt of elliptical galaxies. Specifically, we determine the size of the systematic trend along the FP in the orbital radial anisotropy, in the dark matter (DM) content and distribution relative to the bright matter, and in the shape of the light...
